30/60/90 plans

The 30/60/90 plan is the roadmap a transitional CTO or CIO builds from day one to orchestrate their ramp-up without breaking continuity. In three thirty-day sequences it moves the mission from diagnosis to a steered trajectory.

The first 30 days focus on understanding: mapping the information system, meeting teams, and spotting critical dependencies. The next 30 days frame the specific mandate: governance, reporting, and business/delivery priorities are aligned, then key decisions are executed (restarting a project, upgrading a process, setting budget guardrails, depending on the context). The final 30 days consolidate outcomes: continuity is secured, the medium-term path is documented, and either the internal handover or the continuation of the mandate is prepared.

The value of a 30/60/90 plan is to turn an uncertain period — between an incumbent leaving and a successor arriving — into a steered journey. It sets an explicit rhythm, shared expectations, and measurable checkpoints so leadership sees what the mission delivers at each stage, whether the mandate is continuity, interim coverage, stabilisation, or modernisation.
